The aged liner left Salvador Brazil earlier last week under a tugboats tow and was headed for a scrap yard in India when it developed a leak in the aft section. In this role she served well into the 1990s before finally sinking en-route to the scrapyard in 2000.

This ship was originally with the Matson Lines and was quite famous. Chandris initially operated Britanis as an immigrant liner carrying Greeks and other European passengers to Australia before being dedicated entirely to cruise duties under the Chandris Fantasy Cruises brand. Scrapping finished in July 2017.
It was said at the time that the insurance payout on her enabled Chandris to buy Britanis as a replacement which had been laid up in San Francisco since September 1962 and was up for sale at a bargain price. The family took this cruise back in 1992 I was hooked on cruising from that time on. I travelled on this ship in the Summer of 1987 for my senior cruise.
She was used as a troopship from 1941 to 1956 when she was renamed Matsoniato sail between Los Angeles and Honolulu. The 110-metre MS Britannia was sailing on the Ijessel River near the Dutch city of Zutphen when it started taking.
